Best month & time to propose in Paris

Month-by-month timing, weather, crowds, sunset hours, and Eiffel Tower sparkle — everything you need to pick your date.

The short answer

The three strongest months for a Paris proposal are May, June, and September — long golden hours, pleasant temperatures, flattering light, and slightly fewer crowds than peak summer. October is a close runner-up for moody, romantic light. Winter has its own magic (Christmas lights, near-empty viewpoints) but expect short days and cold. Below, every month with what to expect.

Month by month

Sunset times are approximate for central Paris and shift week to week.

January

Quiet

Sunset ~5:00-5:30pm · 4-8°C

Cold, often grey, but the lowest tourist numbers of the year and the cheapest private-venue rates. Christmas lights linger until early January.

February

Quiet

Sunset ~6:00-6:30pm · 4-9°C

Valentine's Day spikes restaurant prices but viewpoints are calm. Cherry blossoms begin late month at Jardin des Tuileries.

March

Good value

Sunset ~7:00-8:00pm · 6-12°C

Spring begins, blossoms peak around Trocadéro and along the Seine. Variable weather — always have a backup plan.

April

Lovely

Sunset ~8:30pm · 8-15°C

Magnolias and cherry blossoms in full bloom. Pleasant temperatures, occasional rain — Paris in spring at its postcard best.

May

Peak

Sunset ~9:00-9:30pm · 12-19°C

The strongest month overall. Long golden hours, flattering green light, mild evenings. Book 4-6 weeks ahead.

June

Peak

Sunset ~9:45pm · 15-22°C

The longest days of the year. Sunset proposals run late, magical light. Higher crowds and prices than May.

July

Crowded

Sunset ~9:45pm · 17-25°C

Warm but very busy. Avoid Bastille Day (July 14) — many viewpoints are closed for fireworks. Plan around it.

August

Crowded

Sunset ~9:00pm · 17-25°C

Hot, very touristy, but viewpoints stay beautiful. Many local restaurants close for vacation. We adjust evening timing for cooler air.

September

Peak

Sunset ~7:45-8:30pm · 14-22°C

The other "perfect month". Warm light, comfortable temperatures, tourists thinning. Our most-requested month.

October

Lovely

Sunset ~6:30-7:30pm · 9-16°C

Autumn light at its richest — gold, red, copper leaves. Cool evenings; bring a coat. Beautiful for the Seine.

November

Moody

Sunset ~5:00-5:30pm · 5-10°C

Grey and atmospheric. Christmas lights begin mid-month. Indoor venues shine — hotel suites and rooftop terraces with heaters.

December

Festive

Sunset ~4:50pm · 3-8°C

Christmas lights everywhere — Champs-Élysées, Galeries Lafayette, Avenue Montaigne. Cold but magical. Book early for the holiday week.

Best time of day

Sunset (last 30 minutes before sundown) — the most-requested time. Soft, warm light on the city, and the Eiffel Tower lights up exactly at nightfall. Plan to arrive at the viewpoint 30-40 minutes early to settle and let the photographer find the angle.

First hour after sunset (blue hour + first sparkle) — the sky goes deep blue while the city lights come on. The Eiffel Tower sparkles for 5 minutes at the top of every hour, and the first sparkle of the night is the most cinematic.

Sunrise (45 min before to 30 min after) — the secret luxury. Almost no tourists, soft warm light, and the city wakes up around you. Especially beautiful at Pont de Bir-Hakeim or Quai Debilly. Trade-off: you and your partner need to be up before 6am in summer.

Mid-day — avoid for proposals. The light is flat, crowds are at peak, and the photos lack warmth. Great for sightseeing, less great for the "yes" moment.

Eiffel Tower sparkle — exact timing

The Eiffel Tower sparkles for 5 minutes at the top of every hour from nightfall until 11pm (1am during summer months). The first sparkle of the night, just after sunset, is the most-photographed moment in Paris.

Approximate first-sparkle time by month:

We time the entire proposal so that the moment you go down on one knee lines up with the first sparkle. The look on your partner's face when the tower lights up is the photo of the night.
